 THE MIRACLE OF LIFE INSURANCE:

A Life Insurance policy is just a time yellowed piece of paper with columns of figures and legal phrases, until it is baptized with a widow’s tears. Then it becomes a modern miracle, Aladdin’s Lamp. It can be food, clothing, shelter, undying affection. It is the sincerest love letter ever written.

It eases the aching heart of the partner who remains behind; a comforting whisper in the dark and silent hours. It furnishes new hope, fresh courage and the strength to pick up the broken threads and carry on. It can help supply the milk that quiets the crying of the hungry baby in the night. It can provide a college education for the children; a chance for a career instead of a job. It can be a Dad’s blessing to his daughter on her wedding day. It can be a parent’s uninterrupted dreams and plans for their family’s future. through life insurance, they live on. The premiums they pay help provide the greatest of all privileges - the privilege of providing for your family after death

  I HAVE SEEN LIFE INSURANCE
Each Sunday Morning For Some Twenty Odd Years I Have Seen Life Insurance.

Some twenty years ago, there came through the blackness of night an awful cry as young Ahmed, a bookkeeper working at night in a deserted office, stumbled and fell into an open elevator shaft. His widow never saw him again. He left her as well as two small children, a boy and a girl. But he left something else as well, an adequate life insurance program, not large but carefully planned.

After the mortgage was paid, Mrs. Ahmed wisely decided that she would devote herself to her children, staying with them and making them a home until they were grown. It took a very careful planning and she planned accordingly. There was money enough for the college and when the children were about through, Mrs. Ahmed took what was left of the life insurance and spent a year in university, obtaining her master’s degree so that she could make her own living when the children were on their own.

The son became a physician, already well spoken of in our town. The daughter married wisely and happily. Two new homes which are a credit to the community and an asset to the nation have been established.

And because of special training, Mrs. Ahmed has found a field of useful service in which she can spend her energies making the world a better place in which to live.

As each Sunday morning for twenty years, the Ahmed’s family gathered at Mr. Ahmed’s house, nicely dressed, clean, with all the earmarks of a home background of sound and substantial living, I saw life insurance.

To me life insurance is not an actuary or an adding machine or a home office building or a policy. Of course life insurance is all of these things and many more. But to me life insurance is the Ahmed’s family gathering at Mr. Ahmed’s house every Sunday.

  HEALTH CORNER:
  Heat-related illnesses
Heat exhaustion

Signs and symptoms - early heat illness signs, loss of coordination, collapse, heavy sweating, cool, moist, pale skin, dry mouth with excessive thirst, fast pulse, low to normal temperature Causes - reduced blood circulation and flow to brain, dehydration.

Treatments: If conscious, give cool water to drink (do NOT give beverages containing caffeine or alcohol)-- make sure they drink slowly by giving a half glass of cool water every 15 minutes, rest lying down in a cooler, shaded area; loosen or remove clothing and cap, splash cold water on body and massage arms and legs

  Can stress make me ill?

Yes. If the pressures you are facing are prolonged, happen too frequently, or are out of your control, the stress reactions in your body can become chronic. This may lead serious or permanent ill health problems:

Stress reactions may suppress your immune system, increasing your susceptibility to diseases.
Tense muscles and soft tissues are more easily damaged under pressure.
Psychological distress leads to depression and anxiety.
Stress is linked with health-damaging habits, such as smoking, alcohol and problem eating, all of which are associated with other diseases.

  Heat Stroke

Signs and Symptoms: Dizziness, confusion, headaches, irrational behavior, coma, reduced or no sweating; fast pulse, rapid breathing, convulsions, nausea, vomiting.

Causes: Dehydration, sustained exertion, reduced blood flow to brain, heart, etc., body unable to cool itself, overexposure to high temperatures even without exertion.

Treatments: Move to shaded area, remove shoes and outer clothing, wrap in wet cloth/pour water on/fan rapidly, elevate legs, clear vomit to prevent choking, if victim refuses water, is vomiting, or there are changes in level of consciousness, do not give anything to eat or drink.

  Outdoor Workers

Outdoor workers exposed to high temperatures for long periods are at risk from sunstroke, sunburn, and heat exhaustion. Sun or heat stroke is more likely when heavy physical work is being done.

To avoid these effects: working hours should be kept short, clothing, including protective clothing, should not be tight and restricting, and should allow body heat to escape, plenty of rest periods in a cool place should be taken, and cool, clean water should be provided for frequent drinks. It is important to replace water lost through sweating. Exposure to excessive sunlight can cause skin rashes or skin burns. Ultraviolet radiation in sunlight can also cause skin cancer. Fair-skinned people who do not develop a suntan quickly, are most at risk. Avoid excessive exposure to sun by covering bare skin with lightweight material and taking frequent rest breaks in the shade. Sun protection creams may also help.
